In the past, when worked for biotechnology companies, the most common on-boarding process was to hand you a pile of technical papers. Then you were given a day or two to catch up on the science. After that your buddy was the person who hired you or your closest co-workers. I say closest bc it could also the nearest physical neighbors, even if the person was from another group. Biotechnology was completely different. If you replaced a person you simply assumed their physical location and accoutrements. :))
