Designing a Fitness App User Profile: What to Include

A user profile is an element that can be found virtually in kind of an app. Be it a taxi service or a social media platform, most likely, there will be a place where all the user information is organized.

Usually, user profiles have some basic info, such as names or profile pictures. But how is a user profile in a fitness app different from such screen in other applications? What are its specifics? Let’s discuss which features should not be omitted!

The user’s data

Fitness app user profiles require a bit more information than just the person's name and birthday. To offer your users suitable workouts and track their progress more effectively, it is often necessary to have some information about their physiques, such as body weight, height, age, sex, and so on.

It is important to allow the users to skip such questionnaires as not everyone might be willing to share the information about their bodies and health. Some people might not even know it. So, let’s see the user’s physique data as a way to make better suggestions rather than a compulsory step.

Goal setting

Goal setting is crucial for motivating users to keep up with their routines. It is best to make goal-setting a part of the onboarding process, so your users would immediately understand how the app can help them.

Later on, users should be able to keep track of their goals in the personal profile section to see how close they are to achieving the aim. Additionally, some users might want to change their goals or set new plans.

Progress tracking

We primarily use fitness app for tracking our achievements. Be it the number of kilometers you run today or your daily calorie intake, you would probably want to see how it is all going.

In our bigger article about fitness app design, we discussed why it is best to present such data in the form of infographics. Long story short, it is hard to perceive plain numbers, so all the information should be visualized. Just one look and the users can easily understand their progress.

Social media integration

People often say that if no one saw it, it didn’t happen. True? Well, maybe. The fact is that we love sharing our achievements online: it gives us a fair amount of recognition as well as shows our interests. What is more, posting a screenshot of your evening run can inspire your friends to do the same.

That’s why you should consider adding social media integration to the user profile section. Even if your fitness application features a feed, people still want to share their news across other platforms. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat are among the most popular social networks that users would like to see integrated into the app.

The challenges of designing a fitness app user profile

As we can see, a fitness app user profile has its specifics. First of all, it requires a bit more information during the registration and onboarding, such as the user’s physique and goals. Secondly, the app should give more details, too — users need to get regular feedback on their progress and achievements.

A user profile is only one screen of a fitness application. What about all the other features? Sign-up, activity tracking, workout databases? We got it covered in this article — here you can learn about all the aspects of a fitness app design!
