Networking as a WebDev with Polywork

Let me be upfront and maybe save you some time: I'll be absolutely honest about what I think, but for the sake of transparency this post is sponso...

After 2 months of waiting, I am still at around 4000 in waiting list. This makes me reconsider polywork as an alternative to platforms like LinkedIn. I do want to see some new alternative platform for professional networking but almost all the tweets or posts I see about polywork are sponsored content or influencer content.

Now this whole thing feels like a marketing hyping technique. Flood all internet with sponsored content, make user wait in line to generate fomo, then hook user.

Here polywork.com/invite/inhuofficial-c... you can "skip the queue".

The whole waiting list is just marketing hype + investor bull (we have 5000 people waiting to join is a great way to get investors excited), there are thousands of early access codes available so it isn't exclusive.

I am on your side about the hype, but who knows, maybe they will get there and deliver a good product so you might as well explore.

Have a read of the comments on my (evidentially not sponsored 🤣) article on PolyWork before you plunge in just to see what others think (ignore me being negative!).

Thanks, Finally this time an invite code worked. For past two months, all invite code I tried were already spent. Now I can get to see how polywork actually works.

there are thousands of early access codes available so it isn't exclusive.

I wasn't trying to imply that it is a scam, I am actually excited to see a new platform which could help expand my professional network, which is important for me as a freelancer. But I will say that there is some deliberate efforts given to generate hype among its user base, whether it was to attract investors or for some other technical reason. For first month, I was getting fomo as many influencers I follow had already signed up, then I slowly started to switch my emotion because I don't want to get over-hyped just to get under-whelmed.

Again, Thanks for a working invite code. My profile is Abhinav1217 if you would like to connect.

They hype is purely for investment, they just raised $13 million so you can't knock it, it worked!

I just hope that now they have that investment the hype turns into something useful!

Let me know how you get on as although I am negative about it I do want it to work as the concept of an alternative to LinkedIn sounds great!

13 million !! Wow !! No complain there, They had a plan and they saw it through. Kudos to them.

Onboarding took longer then I imagined. They have tags for a lot of stuff but then It get confusing midway. It feels they are trying to do a lot more on the platform. I could still see a lot of keywords like AI assistant, mentoring, volunteering, etc.

Interface is cool though, Hope they make a dark mode for it. 😂

Also I read your article, I could really feel you on the long list of tags, And yes, Once my onboarding was complete, I am trying to figure out what to do with it.

Like I said, over-hyped to feel under-whelmed. I will need to spend few days with it.

@lukeshiru said there was a dark mode, I couldn't find it so perhaps they can help?

Tried switching prefers-color-scheme: dark on but it did nothing for me 😋!

They have a dark mode already, but for now you need to actually ask for it here: twitter.com/Polywork/status/142808...

Thread Thread

Ah that explains it...also really strange, as surely it is just as easy to have a toggle button with the words "dark mode (experimental)" on it!

Guess they must be doing something server side with style sheets to make it work?

If you're looking to collaborate with someone in one of your proyects, you can head up to the space station and look for folks interested in collaborating there.

If you're just open to collaborate, having your tags and some highlights is good enough to be contacted by other users about projects they want you to collaborate with.

Still, I understand you, initially being used to other sites that have a lot of different sections, having basically just "3 sections: Multiverse, Space station and profile" feels like there is no much there, but part of what I like about it is the minimalist approach.

Thread Thread
inhuofficial profile image
InHuOfficial

So why not call it "collaboration" and multiverse "discover" or "feed", they are just making it hard for themselves and that feeds into my "it is built by marketers" rather than developers syndrome! 🤣

Just look at how confusing people find the unicorn on DEV to know that "inside knowledge" is not a great idea from a UX perspective.

I think I will step up and use it so I can give a more rounded opinion when they fix the search box.

At the moment there is no way I can see to discover stuff about accessibility or web performance for example, so I would have to trawl through "software engineering" as one of the few tags you can get to.

Yup, that might have to go away in the final product. The naming feels a little like trying to extend the brand to simple stuff like sections. I can't blame them much, because some sites call the root route "home", others "feed", others "timeline". But yeah, having to learn new terminology for new folks just makes the ramp-up process a little steeper.

Thread Thread

Space Station is not something I would easily associate with "collaboration" . I like wacky terminology but at least give accessible hints on what it is. Interface looks modern but it's not something I would call ease of use.

Oh I wouldn't do that, I don't want to be responsible for making someone so passionate about a product turn to the dark side 🤣

Reading only the good things about something will never work for me. Even when I buy stuff, I look for positive and negative reviews, because having only one is not useful at all to make a decision.

At the end of the article I shared a VIP code, using that you can skip the line and try it right now. You can also look in twitter, there are lots of folks sharing VIP codes :D

Hmmmm aren't we at risk of oversharing? From what I read on the Polywork website it wants to differentiate among others by you sharing your beliefs and likes. Linkedin in is a network for work only. Aren't we at risk by going too far in mixing your private life with work life?

I feel that Polywork has a big #privacy risk to it and #privacymatters

Collapse
lukeshiru profile image
LUKESHIRU Author

Not really. Everyone only shares what they want, and at least in my case, you can know I like stuff like star wars, or anime, by just following me on Twitter. My private life is beyond the things I do and like, and the important thing about Polywork is that it allows you to collaborate beyond what platforms like LinkedIn allow.

Still, obviously this is only my personal opinions, I love networks like Twitter while folks hate it, while I hate Instagram and folks love it. Is a matter of preference as well :D

I love Twitter too, but not Facebook (I am probably one of the few that doesn't have a Facebook account 😬).
The Polywork looks great. I am just of the opinion that a work related network/community should not ask for private info that sends a wrong message I believe. Users will feel pressured to do so especially if they see that others have done so already.

They are currently super open to feedback (they added dark mode by popular demand), so asking for privacy control might be great. Just tweet at them.

PS: I hate FB as well, I still have an account there just because of Oculus 😅

@dennisvd Same as any site, privacy conscious people probably shouldn't share there.

Just an FYI that may cause you to reconsider joining (from a privacy and controlling your data perspective): I asked 4 weeks ago for them to delete my account, they just ignored me.

There is currently no other way to delete your account other than email them, so if you set one up it is there to stay for now.

I presume they will fix it once they have pumped their sign-up numbers up / until enough people complain but for now you have even less control of your data than on other sites (as at least you can just delete your account on most social platforms).

But Luke has found value there (and I have had a lot of positive interactions with Luke on DEV so I value their opinion) and had some positive interactions, so maybe sharing more personal stuff is the answer and if you are privacy conscious you just carefully curate what parts you choose to share.

It's crazy that you need a FB account for Oculus.

As in VR or is this another Oculus?

VR

VR indeed. In order to be able to play Oculus VR, you need a FB account, and sadly from my PoV, Oculus is the best VR platform so far -.-

There are things as the lack of settings/controls that I'm excusing because they are still on a "invite beta", but once is actually out of beta that will become a requirement for me, and I'll obviously update this article if things don't improve in that regard with the proper critique ^_^

But what about the networking?

This is the bit I keep trying to get an answer to, has anyone actually done any networking on PolyWork.

Have you had interactions with people on there? The title of your article is all about it but doesn't mention it (other than you planning on doing it)?

Also out of morbid curiosity, did you have to submit this article for their approval in order to get paid and did you have to amend anything?

As you and I have had some great interactions on DEV I know I will get an honest response (and if you getting paid by them relies on your being positive then just don't respond, don't want you missing out)!

I got contacted twice, to participate in a podcast and to beta test, and is still in beta, so from my point of view it works for networking (at least it works better than LinkedIn from my personal experience).

I believe I talked about networking in the article, mainly when I mentioned the features about knowing what others do or what others are willing to do with you.

About your curiosity, being sponsored I sent it to them before publishing obviously, but mainly because I'm not an english native speaker so I wanted some "proof reading" before publishing. They insisted about publishing my honest opinion about it (I recommended it a few times in my Discord already, so it was a no-brainer for me).
