Double opt-in helped a lot too btw. Between a technique in the form and double opt-in, I think in most cases that's all you need to do.
Most mailing list software providers also do some validation on the backend I found out. There was an issue with my mailing list software causing me to see all the emails that would have been stopped by the backend validation.
