Chad, so sorry this is what you experienced. Thank you for sharing this. It is a good reminder for all levels of software engineers, whether starting with a new company/team or as a manager adding new staff.
A walk-through should have been the minimum amount of direction they should have provided. Best would have been a week's onboarding and pair-programming with established team members.
It also sounds like HR did a bait-and-switch to provide a warm body without meeting the team's immediate needs. This screams of a lack of communication between HR and the engineering manager, with duplicity possibly on both sides (HR & Manager).
May 2021 be a better year for us all!

There wasn't much of an HR department but it was definitely a 'just get someone in there' type of hire. It's weird because during the interview process I made it a point to say that I wasn't a Senior Dev and while I can do work, I wasn't some rock star.
