My 'new person' experiences usually have revolved around problem solving once initial 'here's some code you can debug' moments.
Unless I've started with a startup (where everything is on the table) I usually have started with being given a list of bugs to explore/fix. That is regardless of using Agile or other management methods. Generally, I find a niche` and go from there -as per the job description.
....That's the way things were 5 years ago. I'm restarting now so maybe that is different these days.
