About 2 months ago, I purchased a Razer Blade 15 (2019, Base model) and really have been enjoying it. Over the years, I have gone through various pc builds using Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Chromixium (now dead), Linux Lite and Windows (7, 8, 8.1 and 10). Additionally, I have used an HP Spectre x360, Microsoft Surface Pro tablet, Surface Book, Mac minis and Macbooks (which I thoroughly enjoyed using for coding). My previous machines were the HP Spectre x360 (for coding) and a custom built tower for graphics, audio and video editing.
While there’s nothing wrong with my previous setup, I found myself reaching for the laptop more often than using the desktop, which makes sense considering how much more time I spend on coding than the other activities, but still wanted to have the ability to do everything else on the same computer. As much as I get a kick out of building PC’s and appreciate the GPU power they can provide, I simply enjoy using laptops more, mainly due to portability. As for the OS, I like MacOS and Linux based OS’s for what they are and what they offer, but I needed an OS with better touch/stylus support, so that forced me to stick with Windows.
To continue with the touch/stylus point, I have experimented with using a stylus for audio/video editing and found that experience to be rather enjoyable (especially with a wacom pen display), but still wanted access to a physical keyboard for quick keyboard shortcuts and naming files as I save them (I don’t like how the on screen keyboard covers half the screen and consequently, much of what I’m typing).
CPU, GPU, RAM capacity, SSD storage space, screen size and design aesthetics were other considerations I had to make. I looked at many laptop brands/models that had compelling specs/aesthetics before deciding on the Razer Blade 15 that I ended up purchasing. The specs were better than the desktop I had built in 2018 and the Apple influenced design brought back memories of using my first Macbook.
After getting it, I installed a 2TB SSD in the spare SATA drive bay and upgraded the RAM from 16GB to 32GB. It is setup with a single powered USB hub to connect my printer, external HDD’s, audio interface/speakers and Wacom pen display for touch/stylus interaction. A thunderbolt expansion box houses an Elgato HD60 PCI-e video capture card and provides video output to the Wacom pen display.
As for apps I am using the following:
Firefox (Developers Edition)
Snip and Sketch
Google Play Music
