I did Chemistry at university and then worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a while. I got a job in QA hoping to get into research, but they closed the research department a few months after I joined. It was pretty boring. Plus, there were almost annual rounds of redundancies (layoffs), so I figured we didn't have long. The whole plant has closed now.
As I planned my career change, I tried to get more into anything computer related, so took on adminstration of document control sytems and stuff like that.
Just to add to this; I'm not a boffin and I'm not some kind of super intelligent person who finds everything easy. If anyone reading doesn't have a degree, don't let this put you off asking :).
