Amazon's New World is certainly used to players looking for loopholes to loot extra gold, but yesterday the MMO reached a whole new level: the game itself accidentally started giving away large amounts of New World gold to certain players.
The new world feels a bit cursed since it was released back in September this year. It seems like every week there is a new reason why Amazon has to roll back some type of disaster. This usually has to do with the complex economy of the game and the cunning players finding ways to take advantage of the intricate initial problems. But this week's disaster is the responsibility of the publisher itself. As PC Gamer reports, players received a fairly generous 300,000 gold coins on the EU servers.
In a statement posted on the New World website, a developer named Ryan notified players of the bug. The problem started when the game tried to amicably compensate for lost tax revenue for players previously suspended. "This database change was incorrectly granting a very large amount instead of the expected amount," said Ryan. He continued, "Many gamblers would then spend that money, often buying large quantities of items at trading posts." That seems reasonable.
However, New World’s economy was apparently so unstable that they did not want this recent boom to affect their estates and decided that the only option was to take the servers offline and turn back time.
Upon research, it became clear that there was no clean way to undo just the players who had won money as secondary effects were rampant and affecting more players and systems. We have therefore decided to reset characters, companies and trading posts to 12:45 p.m. CET just before the database changes were implemented.
Of course, not everything went smoothly. The notes go on.
During testing, we discovered an issue where a small number of players transferred between 12:45 PM and 3:00 PM CET were stuck in the "character_restore_failure" status. We know exactly which players are affected and are working to rectify the situation. We will update this page as soon as the problem is resolved.
The last update from yesterday stated that while everything else in the game is working again and all players have woken up with three hours of amnesia (and some empty bank accounts), the trading post is still boring.
These issues only seem to have affected the servers in the "central EU", but I'll bet developers in the New World didn't have a good time over the Thanksgiving break.
