I had this situation the first time when I started to study at the university ans was overwhelmed by the intellectual level of the people there (especially lecturers and higher semester students).
But I also think that it is rather "positive intimidating" if these people are welcoming and show empathy, while still maintaining a professional level. I also met some arrogant costudents that made no deal in showing offntheir supreme skills, but it wasn't intimidating - it made me rather angry (which is why avoided these people in the end).
