I had started off with pure Ruby in 2012 and rails around 2013. I made many good things with it, and it's still a joy to use when getting a medium complexity app up, and my go-to for anything more complex than what I can do with Sinatra. That said, for the pure rubyists it does get annoying and I've written one app in rails in the past 2 years but most of my side projects are in Ruby. I wish Ruby - Rails is more of a thing because it's truely a wonderful language with neat syntax that can do far more than Rails type applications.
