Oof... I haaaaaaaaaate public attention (or things that resemble it). Gives me the complete heebie-jeebies. Always has. Fortunately, I've been able to reduce how much of an anti-incentive, it is, but by no means have I managed to get to a point where I wouldn't prefer a simple, private "thank you" (or privately-delivered token) vice anything that involves more than me and the person originating the recognition.
Organizations seeking to provide adequate recognition to those that want/need it also need to recognize that there's no "one size fits all" approach to it. They need to recognize that, if they try to implement a "one size fits all" system, they can create something that's antagonistic and cause people to withdraw or even leave.
