By asking you for a number without divulging what theirs is, they're hoping you'll save them a little or a lot by naming something lower. If you pad it sufficiently, the odds you're leaving money on the table drop (although they're never zero), but you're still surrendering a possible advantage by giving your number first. Like I said elsewhere, it's an information game.
