That’s right! I am taking on a new role of Developer Advocate at my company, Smartsheet. I have been working there for five years now in Support. Much of that time has been spent supporting developers working with the Smartsheet API troubleshooting issues and assisting them to be successful using our SDKs. During this same time I have been teaching myself to write code and build web apps. This has helped me to better handle issues reported and has broadened my horizons into the world of programming and development.
Over the last couple of years I connected with various members of the Engineering team to learn more about possible roles that I could be a good fit for. During this I found the Developer Advocate role. As I looked more and more into what a Developer Advocate does I quickly realized it is a dream position for me. It gives me the opportunity to talk with people and generally nerd out about web technology. I really enjoy the chance to learn from others and their experience while providing my own perspective to teach what I have learned, all while working on behalf of people to better their experience with technology. It is lots of fun for me to write about my experience in tech and I love the challenge of speaking in front of others about a technical topic. I have found lots of interesting people here and on Twitter who are Developer Advocates and speakers. I am thrilled to be able to consider myself part of that group.
This doesn’t mean much will change for me on the writing I do here or posts I make on Twitter. But, I will likely mention Smartsheet as part of my writing or I may include it in talks as I develop content, so I wanted to be up front here about that with this new role at the company. I am also going to start sharing my experience as a Smartsheet employee. Prior to having this role I have kept that out of my public online persona, but now it feels right. I honestly really love working at Smartsheet and believe in the product and what the company is building. With all of that I promise to do my best to not create sales pitches and to bring up Smartsheet when it’s appropriate.
In this new role it is my mission to reach out and talk with developers to learn about what they are doing whether it is building things with Smartsheet or not. For those that are I want to know more about their experience so that I can help to improve it. I am incredibly excited for this new role and the opportunity to help others.
