πŸ” How to Search for Articles on Daily?

Searching was one of the most requested features at Daily. We introduced it in Daily last year in November and got an overwhelming response. You can read about it in detail here. πŸ’―

🌟 Later, we also introduced Vim key bindings in the Daily. A big part of the update was making the search work without using the mouse. It worked out pretty well!

With all the updates, now you can quickly search for the articles in Daily. This guide will help you walk through it.

πŸ” Search in Daily

Daily perform a super-fast search using Algolia. It searches the database against the entered query and also suggests auto-complete when a match is found. ⚑️

You can use this feature to search for:

  • πŸ“Ÿ A particular phrase
  • πŸ“‡ A specific article

Or whatever you'd like.

⌨️ Search Using the Key Bindings

Follow the quick steps below to search via key bindings:

  1. Hit Ctrl T or ⌘ B for Mac, to open a new tab.
  2. Hit tab to shift focus to Daily extension.
  3. Hit \ to open the search bar in Daily.
  4. Type your query and hit enter.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Search without Using the Key Bindings

Look for the magnifying glass icon (πŸ”) on the top right section of Daily. Clicking on it will expand the search bar. Type in your query and you are good to go!

Note that the search functionality comes with the autocomplete feature.

πŸ™Œ Wrap Up

That's all about searching in the Daily. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us.

Stay Safe. ✌️

Hi @saqibameen , I tried this addon for a few hours.

The video on the landing page is excellent. UI is wonderful. Clearly, UI and UX have been given a lot of thought and care.

Alas, I had to remove the addon after the test drive. Your addon hijacks the new tab, which is probably fine for most users. But for someone like me, it only increases information overload.

Say, I am working on a spring, and have to meet the deadline. I open a new tab to type in a query. The last thing I need at this moment is a distraction. But the new tab becomes a distraction because of all the articles it displays.

If it were possible to access your service without the addon, it would let users like me visit it when we have downtime.

Hi Talha,

Thank you for your feedback. First, it's a "new tab" extension, it is supposed to work this way β€” provide the news in an accessible manner and in a way that is passively consumable. Helping the developers to save effort and time in searching for news.

Regarding the distraction part, we totally get that. Sometimes it happens. That's why we have built a Do Not Disturb Mode. You can turn it on while you work.

Again, thank you for your feedback. If you have any other concerns, feel free to reach out.

Of course. It is obvious.

I intended to suggest (request) a UI that does not depend on the "new tab"β€”for example, showing the list only when the user clicks on the addon button, or to host the list at a web address and do away with the addon.

Unfortunately, we are not planning for that. Our current focus is the extension only so that users can consume the news effortlessly.

We understand your concern, that's why we have DND mode.
