I recommend ALWAYS buying from gandi.net! They are not only the oldest and most reputable registrar in existence, but they offer the all-important WHOIS protection (hiding your personal information) for free and by default. They're at least as inexpensive as Namecheap, and offer a smooth, simple interface that is capable of handling even the most complicated of configurations.

And, as usual, you can point the domains to anywhere.

On that note, I never recommend getting your domains from your hosting service. They're almost always more expensive, and lock you into their platform.

If you've registered domains with anyone else, including GoDaddy, you can transfer them to Gandi at no additional cost. They won't even charge you for the rest of your paid year! You only pay for the next year.

Personally, I like Linode! Simple, good pricing, great service, no hidden costs. But then, I like having complete control over my server, too.

If you need a managed host instead, I used HostGator for many years (before switching to Linode). Last I knew, they were still pretty good.

(P.S. I do have a referral code for Linode if anyone follows up on this: b650c7a5ccf4dba96b65871836a3f7d9a7503232. When someone uses that while creating a new account, I get some account credits, which I use.)
