Turbo Pascal with its builtin IDE is how it started for me in the early 1990s, followed by Turbo C.
After that Vim was my goto editor for quite a while, since I mostly worked on *nix system. I eventually switched to Emacs and essentially turned it into my OS. Nowadays I use Spacemacs, i.e. Vim inside Emacs with a very opinionated set of configs.
I do however often use IDEs at work since their more advanced features are very helpful for working with big code bases one is not overly familiar with.
