Overall codespaces is very similar to gitpod in overall looks and goals (VSCode in the browser). However, what makes it the "big dog" is due to the direct integration with github, and its direct support with Github and Azure platforms.
I'd put those two platforms in the same overall bucket of UI/UX, but the devil is in the details and since codespaces is first party, it has some inherent advantages. However, you will have to pay for those advantages, and still wait for general availability at this time if your not in closed beta.
