That software is permanent; if it solves a problem well, variations will be asked and paid for. If it does not solve the problem well, it will be replaced.

A historical example: Lotus 1-2-3 was an awesome chunk of code. It got replaced/obsoleted when Excel came out because Excel solved the problem of "I need a spreadsheet" better. It wasn't Microsoft's marketing muscle, it was that Excel, particularly its macro language and functions, were better than 1-2-3.
