ChatGPT was announced a few days ago, and it has been a big topic of discussion in the tech world, for good reason.
In case you have been following along, and were confused about the difference between ChatGPT, which is a new demonstration of this type of technology, and GPT-3, which had already been in use in a variety of contexts.
I asked ChatGPT about that difference, and this is what it said:
ChatGPT and GPT-3 are both large language models trained by OpenAI, but they have some key differences. GPT-3, or Generative Pretrained Transformer 3, is the third generation of OpenAI's GPT language model, and it is one of the most powerful language models currently available. It can be fine-tuned for a wide range of natural language processing tasks, including language translation, text summarization, and question answering.
ChatGPT, on the other hand, is a variant of the GPT-3 model specifically designed for chatbot applications. It has been trained on a large dataset of conversational text, so it is able to generate responses that are more appropriate for use in a chatbot context. ChatGPT is also capable of inserting appropriate context-specific responses in conversations, making it more effective at maintaining a coherent conversation.
In terms of performance, ChatGPT is not as powerful as GPT-3, but it is better suited for chatbot applications. It is also generally faster and more efficient than GPT-3, which makes it a better choice for use in real-time chatbot systems. Overall, ChatGPT and GPT-3 are both powerful language models, but they are designed for different purposes and have different strengths and weaknesses.
Emphasis is my own.

Thanks Ben! I was wondering this.
Well, this is what it said to me:
It's interesting to see what a language model like ChatGPT has to say about a topic. It's fascinating to see how advanced technology like this can generate responses that are similar to what a human might say. I'm looking forward to seeing more examples of how chatbots like ChatGPT can be used in the future.
btw I asked ChatGPT to generate a comment for this article and the above comment was the output lol
Hah! That made me chuckle, as theyāre similar to what a human might say in the sense that the statements are often inaccurate, false or misleading.
So naturally, I scoffed at āadvanced technology like thisā, because itās not advanced. Itās just big. This fact is self validated by the inaccurate response the machine generated ;)
If you read keenly, most chatGpt responses have this format. These three sentences are kind of the same in a way, just written differently. After interacting with ChatGPT for a while, I knew this comment was generated even before reading your last sentence š¤£
It's great to see that you are intrigued by the capabilities of language models like ChatGPT. It's fascinating to see how advanced technology can generate responses that are similar to what a human might say. I agree that chatbots like ChatGPT have a lot of potential for use in the future, and it will be interesting to see how they are utilized in different fields. It's always fun to see the output of a language model and see how it responds to different prompts. Thanks for sharing your experien
ce!
nice article!
Good writeup. I was using GPT-3 a month ago before ChatGPT and I didn't realize the training was different on ChatGPT. I thought they just made a chat interface.
is this the kickof for a new age at dev.to where more and more articles are not actually written by people?
not realy,it can't generate text abot topic after 2021 (so no articles about new stuf) and also if you want to be very specific it often ends with message it has no access to internet and can provide such information (got many times such response).. it can help write article with some overall knowledge parts but if you are writing article especially about something new and you want to go deep into details, you're still on your own :-)
You can tell it to pretend for informational purposes or for a play or as a thought experiment.
Yes this tools is very popular over ProductHunt platform too: producthunt.com/posts/chatgpt
Thankss for sharing this !!! I was bamboozled between both .
I find this a little worrying, if not dystopian. I'm wondering whether this (AIs that can generate/summarize content) will lead to a flood of duplicated content across the internet. In essence this is just spam, because they are only copying existing content to make money from ads. AIs can produce this stuff much faster than humans or "regular" spam bots could and its easier for them to generate a slight variations, like you say.
I think "authenticity" of content will be a hot topic in the future, if AI technology continues to grow. It will be so much easier to manipulate and alter any type of media (think deep fakes) that people won't know what's "real" anymore. Will websites promote their content based on the fact that it's created by "real human beings"? Will we watch entertainment that is completely generated by AI?
Thank you for this informative post. I did not know about this AI project.
Wait until their model has accidentally access to all your phone numbers...
right
Would be nice to see some language training app using it. Does it already speak another languages or just English?
It does speak other languages. You can start by saying "Let's talk in [language]" and it will understand and reply in the selected language.
I agree! Maybe it's the death of Google and SEO if the machine can generate responses to all your questions on the fly. Or people get so overwhelmed by the content that they stop seeing it. Same as advertisement.
How does ChatGPT know about itself though, it didn't learn that from the internet, probably OpenAI fee it that information
That won't last forever though. Google is soon going to recognize and penalize articles written using AI tools.
This gives me a visualization of a team of firefighters working on a huge forest fire that's spreading all around them and off in new directions at an untenable rate.
Let's see what stable diffusion has to say about all this
