When I'm finding images to use, I've noticed that 1280x500 seems like an ideal size to properly "fit" in the body of the articles. So I take the images and crop them to that size. But sometimes they're a little too tall/short or a little too wide/narrow to fix them easily with simple cropping. So if they're still a little outta whack after cropping, I typically complete the process by just resizing them to 1280x500.
On most images, it's hard to even notice, unless you have the original sitting next to you for comparison. But again, good eye!
