I've found that most of my speed in development comes from working on what is known until a hard and complex unknown reveals itself, and then pairing with other developers on my team to tackle the truly hard parts.
Pairing with another developer is incredibly valuable. We express our thoughts out loud, forcing each of us to clearly explain our plan of attack. We help each other past road blocks, and can pull each other back on track if we start to wander off down a dangerous path.
